Olympic Traditions: Completing the Race

Every four years, an amazing event takes place on the world stage; it is called the Summer Olympics. The best athletes from around the world gather to compete at a level most of us will never aspire to attain.  The games are coming up at the end of the month in London and promise to be quite exciting.

But, this year’s athletes have a lot to live up to. The Olympic tradition is filled with amazing stories that when taken together reveal the insanity of our world and the possibility of changing it, one person at a time.

So many Olympic stories are incredible.  Whether you think back to the events that inspired the movie “Chariots of Fire” from the 1924 Olympics, (that’s the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, two British runners helped each other and at the same time brought glory to England) or Jesse Owens the black runner who competed for America in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin defeating Hitler’s Aryan athletes, the stories that unfold at the Olympics are far more important than mere sporting events.

Do you remember the tragedy of the Munich Olympics in 1972 when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by the Islamic Militant group, Black September?  They sought to capture the world stage and only drew attention to the cancerous nature of their own ideology.

Time and again, individual stories of triumph arise out of the Olympic back stories that seem to help us correct our own focus.

The Olympic stories are larger than life because so often, athletes have been able to bring our world together when it seems so likely that we will be torn apart by humanity’s discontent.

The Olympics have provided us with so many storylines, so many individual athletes competing not so much against each another, but against themselves.

Perhaps the greatest Olympic story relates to a relatively unknown marathon runner from the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.  Tanzania's John Stephen Akhwari was competing in the Marathon, but the thin air had already caused 17 of the 75 runners to drop out of the race. It was a grueling event and one not repeated in any Olympics since.

Although AkHwari had fallen and dislocated his knee early in the competition, he pressed on. His knee was heavily bandaged. The pain was nearly unbearable. Still Awhwari ran.

More than an hour after the race had been decided, a severely wounded Akhwari entered the Estadio Olimpico Universitario to the slight applause from a few remaining spectators.

At the time, it did not seem like history in the making.

But to those who would later watch the moment unfold on tape—and later in one of Bud Greenspan's acclaimed Olympic documentaries—it became the seminal moment of athletic perseverance.

Asked afterwards by Greenspan why he had continued in the face of such obvious defeat, Akhwari famously replied: "My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish it.

While Akhwari’s knee gave way, his character didn’t.  He chose to  because it represented who he was and who his nation was in sending him.

The 2012 Olympics are a blank slate tonight. The torch hasn’t been lit. The athletes haven’t yet held a single completion under the Olympic banner, but many of them have already determined whether they will win or lose simply by how they have trained themselves to stay in the race.

If you are facing hopelessness in your life, you may feel like giving up. You might feel like the loss you feel now is forever. It isn't!  You have reason to push on and stay in the race.

Why? You were created by a loving God who desires to give you life, abundant life. He knows the disappointment you feel. He understands the pain of loss. He did something about it.  He sent His one and only Son to live among us, to race along side us.  Jesus Christ understands your pain because he is one of us. He died and rose again so that the pain you feel right now doesn't need to last forever.

The peace you need to carry on is just one prayer away. Simply let God know that you've made mistakes. Let Him know that you are sorry and then ask Him to give you new life through Jesus Christ.  When you do, you'll discover the strength you need to run your race to the finish line. Best of all, you'll know that Jesus is right there with you, running every step of the way to help you succeed.

Demi Lovato: Overcoming Despair

Disney star and singer Demi Lovato seemed like she had everything anyone would ever hope for, but the teen idol was battling a sense of despair and hopelessness so serious that she entered a three-month treatment program to find a way forward. She is not alone.  Many people reach a place where they feel “all hope is lost.”

Desperation and hopelessness have reached pandemic proportions.  Lovato confessed that she felt plagued by depression since childhood.   She was so bullied during middle school that she opted out of public schools and completed her studies at home.  It left a scar on her life that fame could not erase. Fortunately, she found help before it was too late. Where can you go to get hope?

Jesus Christ came to give hope to the hopeless.  He understands that many people today are living in despair. He holds the key to finding lasting peace and joy. He was so committed to helping people find a way out of their discouragement that He bore our sins on his shoulders when He died on the cross. When we cry out to Jesus, He hears us and offers us a new life.

If you have lost hope, Jesus Christ can bring you out of despair. He will befriend you and guide you forward.  It all begins with a conversation, a prayer. If you are ready to make a change from hopelessness to hope, pray this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I am sorry for all the things I have done wrong. I have been so discouraged. I lost hope. Now, I know You can bring me new life. I ask You to become the Lord and Savior of my life. Please renew my hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

Overcoming Hopelessness

Life is full of ups and downs.  That’s all well and good if you have more ups than downs.  Unfortunately, life isn’t that predictable. If you’ve been facing a season when everything seems to be falling apart, it doesn’t take much to lose hope. Lost hope often leads to despair.

Many people find themselves at a point when they believe all hope is lost. Life can take an unexpected turn and side track our dreams and ambitions. The hopelessness that follows can be a powerful emotion.  It often prevents people from moving on. They feel stuck, unable to take positive steps toward healing. If that sounds like your experience, how can you move out of despair and get hope?

Jesus Christ came to earth that we might have life, abundant life. He understands how many people find themselves in hopeless situations.  He understands that many people live in despair. He saw firsthand how difficult life can be when He walked the streets of Israel. He understood how good people go through bad times and through His teaching and His miracles, he offered hope to those who lived with loss. When you follow Jesus, you trade despair for hope.

If you have been losing hope, if you feel a sense of despair, I have good news.  Jesus cares about your situation. He can forgive your failings and increase hope for your future.  He will walk with you when everyone else turns their backs.  All you need to do is go to Him and ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. He will forgive whatever wrongs you have done and give you a new beginning, full of hope and joy.

Beating Despair

Despair can sometimes stop you in your tracks. In those moments, where can you go to get hope? If you are fighting a sense of hopelessness, and want to increase hope read on!

Losing hope is not a new experience. People throughout the ages have experienced hardships that caused them to battle despair. Yet, generations later, here we are.  Those who have lost hope lose sight of the fact that they are not alone in this world. Out of despair, they begin to believe they are alone in their pain, but there is hope in Jesus!

Many people are surprised to learn that God cares about them as a person, but the Psalmist, King David, wrote: “When I begin to lose hope, you already know what I am experiencing.” (Ps. 142:3) Although you are in despair now, you can take hope in God’s concern for you.

God specializes in giving hopeless people new beginnings. Whether your battle is with relationships, finances, addiction or other issues, God can change your circumstances. It all begins with a simple conversation between God and you.

Begin with a simple request: “Lord Jesus, I need You in my life, please be my friend and Savior. I am sorry for the wrongs I have done. You know I have lost hope. You know that I have been living in despair. Please help me find new life today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you want a way out of despair, talk to Jesus. He is willing to give you a new beginning that will bring you great hope!

Renewing Hope

What do we do when we feel hopeless? Feeling like we’ve lost hope is all too common these days. When the world seems to spin out of control, we can lose hope very quickly.

The world is full of people who have lost hope. How many people have tried and failed only to lose hope and so often they never try again. We find ourselves losing hope of ever being better than we are.

Hopelessness can drag us down into despair so fast that it’s hard to find a way back up. When we feel hopeless we risk losing all of our dreams. It seems as if everything that we want is lost.

Our best laid plans fall through leaving us not knowing what to do. We are alive but not living life to the fullest. We are alive but living in despair. How do we find a way to carry on through life?

But how can we increase hope when we are lost in despair? The only way to get out of despair is to increase hope.

Often we place our hopes in things that seem to crumble right beneath us. Jesus, God's Son, us offers a way to move beyond despair and get hope. God sent his son to give us hope for a new life. Jesus is the only one who offers us genuine hope. He doesn’t promise an easy life but we never have to worry about hopelessness again because he is our ultimate hope.

Overcoming Hopelessness

“Where can someone go to get hope?”  You may have asked that question if you battle with despair.  Feeling hopeless can begin for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you have more bills than money. Perhaps you have lost a relationship that you valued deeply.  Perhaps, you tried and failed at something very important to you. Hopelessness is a ruthless enemy.

There is no store that sells hope. There is no government program that offers hope for the hopeless. Losing hope happens to nearly all of us at one time or another. But, if you lost hope, don’t give up! Although you have lived in despair, you can discover hope and start anew!

Regardless of how you found yourself in despair, you can get hope again!  How?  The Apostle Paul taught us hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts. (Romans 5:5) When we understand God’s love, we can increase hope for a better life and for eternity.

Out of despair, many people become desperate.  They feel alone, isolated, unloved.  Their plans seldom work out the way they imagined and they often end with much less than they hoped for.

But, God brings hope to those who call out to Him. He understands your need and responds with fresh hope! Consider the words of the Bible: Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love. Psalm 33:18 ESV

If you are living in despair, if hope escapes you, cry out to God for help.  He will hear your cry and pour out His love on your life.  He provides hope for tomorrow and joy for our journey today.

Hope That Stands the Test of Time

Are we really helpless? Is there really an answer to the emptiness that looms inside of us? So many times we look for answers in all the wrong places. We even try to place the value on our own selves instead of what is really matters.

We can search for the answers but unless we turn our hearts and minds toward God we will never really find the answer to our hopelessness.  I can search for the answers inside of myself or within religions but I would never find the true answer.

We try to rid ourselves of the things that are creating that hopelessness.  It can be our marriage, job, or any situation but if we just walk away we never really stop the hopelessness.  It may disappear for a while but will come back unless we turn our sight to God.

Hopelessness will never disappear in our lives with out leaving ourselves behind and turning our hearts and minds toward the only one who can offer us the solution.  I lost hope many times in the past but only found that God is able to give me back the hope that makes me want to go forward in life.

Finding Hope

Most people find themselves losing hope at one time or another.  Life is full of unexpected problems. Things happen that interrupt our plans and may even cause us to feel despair.  In those difficult moments, where can you get hope? Jesus offers each of us a way out of despair and hopelessness.  He understands what it is like to be human. He lived as a man and faced great difficulties.  He experienced great pain and even death on our behalf, but the good news is that Jesus rose from the dead and now offers each of us a way to get hope that cannot be taken from us, ever! If you have lost hope and need a way to move forward again, Jesus is your answer.  He paid the price for your sin and is willing to give you a new start in life.  It’s as simple as admitting your need, asking Him to forgive you and accepting that He took the cost of your failures on himself. The Bible says: If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved!  You can get hope again! Instead of losing hope, you can experience the joy of a new life.  If you have been living in despair, why not ask Jesus to take away your hopelessness and start anew today!
