What kind of pain could be so severe that a 12 year old girl saw no way forward in life? Rebecca Sedwick, a beautiful girl from Florida in the United States, was so bullied by up to 15 middle school girls that she sought out suicide options online. Her pain was so overwhelming that she jumped from a tower onto the concrete below snuffing out her own life.
Hopelessness is a cruel, hateful force that tortures its victims. But is hopelessness all-powerful? When people become isolated from those who would help, they might believe that everyone, everywhere is against them. That appeared to be the case for Rebecca. Even though she left the school where the taunting took place, her enemies sent hateful texts demanding that Rebecca take her own life to spare the world from dealing with her.
Perhaps Rebecca believed that the pain she felt would last forever. Perhaps she endured so many abuses that she felt the pain she was enduring was the best life offered. But, there is always hope. Almost everyone in Rebecca’s world would have offered her encouragement and hope, but they didn’t understand the depth of her despair.
When we feel hopelessness, it is important to ask for help. It is important to get another perspective because in the midst of life’s storms, we often lose our way. Hearing from others allows us to see that not all is lost, not everyone is against us. In her isolation, Rebecca allowed a few cruel girls to distort her world, transforming it into a living hell. Perfect strangers would have gladly offered hope to a girl who had so much to live for in the years ahead. What was lost in her suicide cannot be regained. Her family, her friends, all of us lost something precious that day.
In spite of the shame she felt, Rebecca’s life, like yours, has incredible worth. Where do we go to regain hope? Jesus came to earth to show us a way of hope. He offers us forgiveness for sin and the chance for a new beginning. That new life came at a high price. Jesus had to die for our sins so that in rising from the dead, He could free us from the price of our own failings.
Fortunately, Jesus saw that as a price worth paying! He offers us the opportunity to discover new life, life in Him that has purpose and worth. He becomes our hope when we place our trust in Him. It is through Christ that we can find perspective again and make our way through the difficult moments of life. Best of all, because Jesus came to earth and lived among us, He is familiar with all of the pain and frustration that life brings. When we talk to Him about our problems, he understands.
If you have endured the the emptiness that comes from another person's rejection, you understand how important it is to have someone in your life who loves you without conditions. Jesus Christ is that person and your relationship with Him can begin with a simple prayer: "Dear Jesus, I am sorry for the wrong things I have done. I ask you to forgive me. I choose to make you the Lord and Savior of my life. Help me to grow close to you in the days ahead. In Your name I pray, Amen!
