For all her life, Adrianne Haslet has lived her dream of dancing. A teacher in a studio and professional dancer, she thought nothing would change that. When she danced, life was perfect and beautiful. She said she felt like she was flying.
After her husband returned from a four month tour in Afghanistan, Adrianne only wanted to enjoy watching the Boston Marathon. April 15, 2013 changed Haslet’s life forever.
Two pressure cookers turned bombs were unleashed on unsuspecting racers and bystanders. Killing three people and injuring countless others, these bombs turned a peaceful marathon into chaos.
In the panic, Adrianne and her husband, Adam, were thrown to the ground, only feet from the second bomb.
In shock, the young dancer was unable to feel pain from her mangled leg, yet it was immobile. As she was taken to a medical tent, she continuously screamed, “I’m a ballroom dancer! Save my foot!”
Her mother gave Adrianna the painful news that her foot was gone. In that moment Adrianne’s life might have fallen apart. Everything she worked to obtain was quickly torn away the moment she lost her foot. She feared what the future held for her. Without her foot, her dream of dancing was dashed.
Restless, Adrianne recovered from the traumatic events that robbed her of her livelihood. Learning to walk and move her leg again was a daunting task, but she did not let it get the best of her. Thinking of all the time she danced, she anxiously reflected that this is the longest she has ever gone without dancing.
If Adrianne reacted with anger, no one would blame her. In her broken world, she held her chin high and put on a brave face. Instead of labeling her future as lost, she says she is determined to dance again.
Filled with hope and a drive to fly once more, Adrianne took every day with a smile. Setting a goal for her future, this brave dancer is confident that one day, she will stand on the ballroom floor once more.
Despite any painful and hopeless situation, there is help. God is always waiting, watching for the day we call out to Him. He grants strength to endure and light to see the right path. No matter what crisis crosses your path, He is prepared to help you move forward. If you ask, He will not hesitate to enter your life.
It only takes a few words to call to Him: “Dear Jesus, thank you for loving me so dearly. Despite all the wrong I have done, you still welcome me with open arms. Please forgive me. I am so broken and afraid, not knowing what the future holds, but I place my future in your hands. Today, I give my life to you and trust you have great plans for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
