On May 31st was a day of great opportunity. Jordan Sekulow and Naghmeh Abedini spoke at the United Nations. There they raised Pastor Saeed Abedini’s case before the United Nation’s Human Rights Council.
Naghmeh portrayed Iran’s persecution of Christians as having a worldwide impact. Together, they fought for the most basic of human rights. This right is to peaceful assembly in exercise of religious beliefs. They urged Iran to release Pastor Saeed Abedini.
As mentioned in earlier entries, Saeed Abedini is a 33 year old U.S citizen and father of two. He is being held in the infamous Evin Prison in Iran, his offense? His religious beliefs. Pastor Abedini suffers from internal bleeding from beatings he endured and the time he spent in solitary confinement.
On the same day that Naghmeh presented Saeed’s case to the UN something significant happened. The international effort, #SaveSaeed, reached another huge milestone. Signatures on the petition to free Pastor Saeed topped 600,000, with people from all over the world signing the petition for his freedom!
Following the hearing on May 31st, Naghmeh Abedini returned to the UN Human Rights Council to deliver a 2 minute speech on the importance of defending those who are persecuted for their faith. She urged them to also take more action on behalf of her husband.
These sessions were presented live over the internet.
It is hard to imagine what Pastor Saeed’s wife and children must be experiencing. But to see Naghmeh fighting, not only for her husband but for the persecuted church, is absolutely inspiring.
Even in the midst of this great trial, Naghmeh fights to keep hope alive for Saeed. Within the prison Saeed is fighting and keeping hope alive among his fellow inmates. If the Abedini family can endure so much and still joyfully serve Christ, so can we!
Jesus Christ came to give hope to the hopeless. He understands that many people live in despair. He holds the key to finding lasting peace and joy. When we cry out to Jesus, He hears us and offers us a new life.
If you have lost hope, Jesus Christ can bring you out of despair. He will befriend you and guide you forward. It all begins with a conversation, a prayer. If you are ready to make a change from hopelessness to hope, pray this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I am sorry for all the things I have done wrong. I have been so discouraged. I lost hope. Now, I know You can bring me new life. I ask You to become the Lord and Savior of my life. Please renew my hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
Please remember to pray for Saeed's speedy release. His wife, Naghmeh, and their two children anxiously are awaiting his victorious return. They need our prayers too.
