Big Opportunities for the Saeed Abedini Case

On May 31st was a day of great opportunity. Jordan Sekulow and Naghmeh Abedini spoke at the United Nations. There they raised Pastor Saeed Abedini’s case before the United Nation’s Human Rights Council.

Naghmeh portrayed Iran’s persecution of Christians as having a worldwide impact. Together, they fought for the most basic of human rights. This right is to peaceful assembly in exercise of religious beliefs. They urged Iran to release Pastor Saeed Abedini.

As mentioned in earlier entries, Saeed Abedini is a 33 year old U.S citizen and father of two. He is being held in the infamous Evin Prison in Iran, his offense? His religious beliefs. Pastor Abedini suffers from internal bleeding from beatings he endured and the time he spent in solitary confinement.

On the same day that Naghmeh presented Saeed’s case to the UN something significant happened. The international effort, #SaveSaeed, reached another huge milestone. Signatures on the petition to free Pastor Saeed topped 600,000, with people from all over the world signing the petition for his freedom!

Following the hearing on May 31st, Naghmeh Abedini returned to the UN Human Rights Council to deliver a 2 minute speech on the importance of defending those who are persecuted for their faith. She urged them to also take more action on behalf of her husband.

These sessions were presented live over the internet.

save saeedIt is hard to imagine what Pastor Saeed’s wife and children must be experiencing. But to see Naghmeh fighting, not only for her husband but for the persecuted church, is absolutely inspiring.

Even in the midst of this great trial, Naghmeh fights to keep hope alive for Saeed. Within the prison Saeed is fighting and keeping hope alive among his fellow inmates. If the Abedini family can endure so much and still joyfully serve Christ, so can we!

Jesus Christ came to give hope to the hopeless. He understands that many people live in despair. He holds the key to finding lasting peace and joy. When we cry out to Jesus, He hears us and offers us a new life.

If you have lost hope, Jesus Christ can bring you out of despair. He will befriend you and guide you forward. It all begins with a conversation, a prayer. If you are ready to make a change from hopelessness to hope, pray this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I am sorry for all the things I have done wrong. I have been so discouraged. I lost hope. Now, I know You can bring me new life. I ask You to become the Lord and Savior of my life. Please renew my hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

Please remember to pray for Saeed's speedy release. His wife, Naghmeh, and their two children anxiously are awaiting his victorious return. They need our prayers too.

It’s All About Me

jjljIf you were born anytime between 1980 and 2000 then you are the generation of many names:
“Generation Y” – because you succeeded “Generation X.” “Millennials” – because of the time period you were born in or raised around or “Echo Boomers” – referring to the generation’s size relative to the Baby Boomer generation.

There are a few others. More recently this generation has been labeled the ‘ME, ME, ME Generation’ by Joel Stein in Time Magazine.

The cover of the May 9, 2013 issue reads “The ME, ME, ME Generation – Millennials are lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents – Why they’ll save us all.”

The first half of the article is filled with Stein's criticisms of Millennials. He presents data and quotes from respected academics who paint a very negative picture. The second half of the article focuses on the positives. He says, “Their perceived entitlement isn’t a result of over-protection but an adaptation of over abundance.” No longer do we have to be farmers or work in factories. Technology provides us with many choices.

Stein's article has proven to be quite controversial and has gotten a lot of responses. Many are coming forward to defend their honor. The “Me Generation” brings up some good points too: the effect of the economy, the value (or lack of value) of a degree and not settling for less than necessary have all shaped this group.

Both sides make a convincing argument. But it can be put best in the closing paragraph of the Time article.

“So, yes we have all that data about narcissism and laziness and entitlement but a generation’s greatest isn’t determined by data. It’s determined by how they react to the challenges that befall them. And just as important as how we react to them. Whether you think Millennials are the new greatest generation of optimistic entrepreneurs or a group of 80 million people about to implode in a dwarf star of tears when their expectation are unmet depends largely on how you view change. Me? I choose to believe in the children. God knows they do.”

Stephen Colbert addressed the 2013 graduating class of the University of Virginia last week. He referenced the article to the new graduates. Then he left them with a challenge to use those positives mentioned by Joel Stein.

“While traditional paths may seem harder to find, that also means that you will learn the hard lesson sooner than most generations. You must always make the path for yourself. Your life will not be defined by the society that we have left you. If you must find your own path, and we have left you no easy path, then decide now to choose the hard path that lead to the life and world that you want.”

Are you finding it difficult to find the path to happiness? Are you feeling hopeless? You may feel like giving up.

You have reason to push on and stay on the path.

Why? You were created by a loving God who desires to give you life, abundant life. He knows the disappointment you feel.

He understands the burden of feeling like you didn’t accomplish what you wanted in life. He understands that you feel like you settled for something less than the best.

The assurance you need to carry on is just one prayer away. Simply let God know that you’ve made mistakes. Let Him know that you are sorry and then ask Him to give you new life through Jesus Christ. When you do, you’ll discover the strength you need to run your race to the finish line. Best of all, you’ll know that Jesus is right there with you, running every step of the way to help you succeed.

One Heart, Second Chance

BlogAn inspirational story from Texas has recently made its way to the public eye. In 2008, a high school football game was played in Grapevine, Texas. This was no ordinary game.

The Gainesville State Tornadoes reached the Grapevine Faith field on a Friday night.

They were met by an unusual scene. Some of the Grapevine fans were cheering for the rival team! They even formed a spirit line for the Tornadoes to run through when they came onto the field. Half of the Grapevine cheerleading squad was also rooting for the opposing team.

Gainesville’s quarterback and middle linebacker, Isaiah told ESPN, “I never thought I’d hear people cheering for us to hit their kids. I wouldn’t expect another parent to tell somebody to hit their kids. But they wanted us to!” That night, the Tornadoes lost the game, 33-14. But they were encouraged!

The question arises: why would Grapevine Faith do all this for a rival team? Gainesville State School is a maximum-security correctional facility. Every game they play is on the road.

Players are escorted to and from the field by 12 uniformed guards with handcuffs in their back pockets. They are serving time for drugs, assault and robbery. It is a hard road they are traveling and few people really believe they can change.

Kris Hogan, Faith’s head coach, said “Here’s the message I want to say, ‘You are just as valuable as any other person on planet Earth.’” It was almost more than the Tornado quarterback could take in.

“Lord, I don’t know how this happened, so I don’t know how to thank you, but I never would have known there was so many people in the world that would care about us.” said Isaiah.

As Tornadoes walked back to their bus, they were handed a bag for the ride home. Inside was food, a bible and an encouraging letter from one of the Grapevine Faith players. That night started something significant to all involved.

The annual game between the two teams is now known as the “One Heart Bowl.” Every year the Grapevine fans are split. As part of their admission to the game, fans are encouraged to bring ankle socks and gloves for Gainesville students to wear during the game.

You may struggle with self-worth like many of the players from Gainesville State School. But you have tremendous worth in the eyes of God. So much so that He sent His one and only Son into our world to provide a way for you to have relationship with Him.

Your life has value. You may struggle with how you feel about yourself, but make no mistake, God values you. He gave His most precious gift to you when He offered you salvation through Jesus Christ. Now the decision is yours. Will you choose Jesus?

If you are ready to find your worth in God’s love for you, pray this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I am sorry for the wrong things I have done. Please forgive me for all those things. I ask You to become Lord and Savior of my life. Help me to find my worth in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Convoy of Hope to Moore, Oklahoma

oklahomaOn Monday, May 20th a category 5 tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma. This is the strongest category of tornadoes measured. It was 2 miles wide with winds that reached between 200-210 miles per hour. It left 17 miles of destruction behind. More than 240 were injured. The death toll stands at 24.

Soon after the tornado died out Convoy of Hope had a disaster response team on the ground. Hal Donaldson, president of Convoy of Hope, said “Our prayers are with the families who have been affected by the Oklahoma tornadoes. Our team on the ground is already providing crucial information that will help us as we mobilize to send emergency supplies and teams to Oklahoma.”

This is not the first time Convoy of Hope has experienced tornado relief. Just two years ago when a tornado hit Joplin, Missouri they were there and still helping today. What they learned while in Joplin is helping Convoy of Hope today in Moore, Oklahoma.

Convoy teams have been working nonstop loading tractor-trailers with relief supplies. They also coordinate response efforts to the Moore, Oklahoma area. Continuing rain and thunderstorms in the area have made response efforts more challenging.

According to Ryan Grabill, disaster response coordinator, “There are thousands of people here that are now homeless and we want to reach to as many of them as we can.”

convoyThere are six tractor-trailer loads of supplies that have been deployed. Additional shipments are planned based on need.

Utility crews have knocked down broken power lines and put up new ones. Survivors are finally able to return to their homes and retrieve their belongings. This is only the first phase of a full-scale response that will last for many weeks, if not months.

Convoy of Hope began with just two guys handing out food and water from the back of a truck. It is now a global movement where different organizations join together to carry out Convoy of Hope’s mission. Their mission is to feed the world. This is achieved through feeding initiatives, community outreaches, disaster response and partner resourcing.

Although it hurts even more when one hits close to home, the organization can respond especially fast. That provides real hope for the survivors.

One survivor, Rhonda Crosswhite, a sixth grade math teacher, used her body as a shield for her students. When interviewed later she admitted, “I did the teacher thing that we’re probably not supposed to do. I prayed — I prayed out loud.”

Many people have experienced the power of prayer in the midst of a huge problem. If you are facing a crisis today, prayer might be the key to moving forward again.

If you need a bit of help getting started, why not pray this prayer? “Dear Jesus, I am sorry for the wrong things I have done in my life. I know I need help to move forward. I want your forgiveness and peace. Please take my life and change me. I want to live for you! In your name I pray, amen!

Olympic Traditions: Completing the Race

Olympic runnerEvery four years, an amazing event takes place on the world stage; it is called the Summer Olympics. The best athletes from around the world gather to compete at a level most of us will never aspire to attain. The games are coming up at the end of the month in London and promise to be quite exciting.

But, this year’s athletes have a lot to live up to. The Olympic tradition is filled with amazing stories that when taken together reveal the insanity of our world and the possibility of changing it, one person at a time.

So many Olympic stories are incredible. Whether you think back to the events that inspired the movie “Chariots of Fire” from the 1924 Olympics, (that’s the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, two British runners helped each other and at the same time brought glory to England) or Jesse Owens the black runner who competed for America in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin defeating Hitler’s Aryan athletes, the stories that unfold at the Olympics are far more important than mere sporting events.

Do you remember the tragedy of the Munich Olympics in 1972 when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by the Islamic Militant group, Black September? They sought to capture the world stage and only drew attention to the cancerous nature of their own ideology.

Time and again, individual stories of triumph arise out of the Olympic back stories that seem to help us correct our own focus.

The Olympic stories are larger than life because so often, athletes have been able to bring our world together when it seems so likely that we will be torn apart by humanity’s discontent.

The Olympics have provided us with so many storylines, so many individual athletes competing not so much against each another, but against themselves.

Perhaps the greatest Olympic story relates to a relatively unknown marathon runner from the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Tanzania’s John Stephen Akhwari was competing in the Marathon, but the thin air had already caused 17 of the 75 runners to drop out of the race. It was a grueling event and one not repeated in any Olympics since.

Although AkHwari had fallen and dislocated his knee early in the competition, he pressed on. His knee was heavily bandaged. The pain was nearly unbearable. Still Awhwari ran.

More than an hour after the race had been decided, a severely wounded Akhwari entered the Estadio Olimpico Universitario to the slight applause from a few remaining spectators.

At the time, it did not seem like history in the making.

But to those who would later watch the moment unfold on tape—and later in one of Bud Greenspan’s acclaimed Olympic documentaries—it became the seminal moment of athletic perseverance.

Asked afterwards by Greenspan why he had continued in the face of such obvious defeat, Akhwari famously replied: “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish it.

While Akhwari’s knee gave way, his character didn’t. He chose to because it represented who he was and who his nation was in sending him.

The 2012 Olympics are a blank slate tonight. The torch hasn’t been lit. The athletes haven’t yet held a single completion under the Olympic banner, but many of them have already determined whether they will win or lose simply by how they have trained themselves to stay in the race.

If you are facing hopelessness in your life, you may feel like giving up. You might feel like the loss you feel now is forever. It isn’t! You have reason to push on and stay in the race.

Why? You were created by a loving God who desires to give you life, abundant life. He knows the disappointment you feel. He understands the pain of loss. He did something about it. He sent His one and only Son to live among us, to race along side us. Jesus Christ understands your pain because he is one of us. He died and rose again so that the pain you feel right now doesn’t need to last forever.

The peace you need to carry on is just one prayer away.

Demi Lovato: Overcoming Despair

Disney star and singer Demi Lovato seemed like she had everything anyone would ever hope for, but the teen idol was battling a sense of despair and hopelessness so serious that she entered a three-month treatment program to find a way forward. She is not alone.  Many people reach a place where they feel “all hope is lost.”

Desperation and hopelessness have reached pandemic proportions.  Lovato confessed that she felt plagued by depression since childhood.   She was so bullied during middle school that she opted out of public schools and completed her studies at home.  It left a scar on her life that fame could not erase. Fortunately, she found help before it was too late. Where can you go to get hope?

Jesus Christ came to give hope to the hopeless.  He understands that many people today are living in despair. He holds the key to finding lasting peace and joy. He was so committed to helping people find a way out of their discouragement that He bore our sins on his shoulders when He died on the cross.

Overcoming Hopelessness

Life is full of ups and downs.  That’s all well and good if you have more ups than downs.  Unfortunately, life isn’t that predictable. If you’ve been facing a season when everything seems to be falling apart, it doesn’t take much to lose hope. Lost hope often leads to despair.

Many people find themselves at a point when they believe all hope is lost. Life can take an unexpected turn and side track our dreams and ambitions. The hopelessness that follows can be a powerful emotion.  It often prevents people from moving on. They feel stuck, unable to take positive steps toward healing. If that sounds like your experience, how can you move out of despair and get hope?

Jesus Christ came to earth that we might have life, abundant life. He understands how many people find themselves in hopeless situations.  He understands that many people live in despair. He saw firsthand how difficult life can be when He walked the streets of Israel. He understood how good people go through bad times and through His teaching and His miracles, he offered hope to those who lived with loss. When you follow Jesus, you trade despair for hope.

If you have been losing hope, if you feel a sense of despair, I have good news.  Jesus cares about your situation. He can forgive your failings and increase hope for your future.  He will walk with you when everyone else turns their backs.  All you need to do is go to Him and ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. He will forgive whatever wrongs you have done and give you a new beginning, full of hope and joy.

Beating Despair

Despair can sometimes stop you in your tracks. In those moments, where can you go to get hope? If you are fighting a sense of hopelessness, and want to increase hope read on!

Losing hope is not a new experience. People throughout the ages have experienced hardships that caused them to battle despair. Yet, generations later, here we are.  Those who have lost hope lose sight of the fact that they are not alone in this world. Out of despair, they begin to believe they are alone in their pain, but there is hope in Jesus!

Many people are surprised to learn that God cares about them as a person, but the Psalmist, King David, wrote: “When I begin to lose hope, you already know what I am experiencing.” (Ps. 142:3) Although you are in despair now, you can take hope in God’s concern for you.

God specializes in giving hopeless people new beginnings. Whether your battle is with relationships, finances, addiction or other issues, God can change your circumstances. It all begins with a simple conversation between God and you.

Begin with a simple request: “Lord Jesus, I need You in my life, please be my friend and Savior. I am sorry for the wrongs I have done. You know I have lost hope. You know that I have been living in despair. Please help me find new life today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you want a way out of despair, talk to Jesus. He is willing to give you a new beginning that will bring you great hope!

Renewing Hope

What do we do when we feel hopeless? Feeling like we’ve lost hope is all too common these days. When the world seems to spin out of control, we can lose hope very quickly.

The world is full of people who have lost hope. How many people have tried and failed only to lose hope and so often they never try again. We find ourselves losing hope of ever being better than we are.

Hopelessness can drag us down into despair so fast that it’s hard to find a way back up. When we feel hopeless we risk losing all of our dreams. It seems as if everything that we want is lost.

Our best laid plans fall through leaving us not knowing what to do. We are alive but not living life to the fullest. We are alive but living in despair. How do we find a way to carry on through life?

But how can we increase hope when we are lost in despair? The only way to get out of despair is to increase hope.

Often we place our hopes in things that seem to crumble right beneath us. Jesus, God's Son, us offers a way to move beyond despair and get hope. God sent his son to give us hope for a new life. Jesus is the only one who offers us genuine hope. He doesn’t promise an easy life but we never have to worry about hopelessness again because he is our ultimate hope.

- James Hennessy

Overcoming Hopelessness

“Where can someone go to get hope?”  You may have asked that question if you battle with despair.  Feeling hopeless can begin for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you have more bills than money. Perhaps you have lost a relationship that you valued deeply.  Perhaps, you tried and failed at something very important to you. Hopelessness is a ruthless enemy.

There is no store that sells hope. There is no government program that offers hope for the hopeless. Losing hope happens to nearly all of us at one time or another. But, if you lost hope, don’t give up! Although you have lived in despair, you can discover hope and start anew!

Regardless of how you found yourself in despair, you can get hope again!  How?  The Apostle Paul taught us hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts. (Romans 5:5) When we understand God’s love, we can increase hope for a better life and for eternity.

Out of despair, many people become desperate.  They feel alone, isolated, unloved.  Their plans seldom work out the way they imagined and they often end with much less than they hoped for.

But, God brings hope to those who call out to Him. He understands your need and responds with fresh hope! Consider the words of the Bible: Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love. Psalm 33:18 ESV

If you are living in despair, if hope escapes you, cry out to God for help.  He will hear your cry and pour out His love on your life.  He provides hope for tomorrow and joy for our journey today.
